2021 R27ob. I was never really comfortable with the exposed rear bilge pump and sea valve/filter in the center lazarette of “Joyful” because I tend to store a lot of heavy items in there. These include the table top, fishing downriggers and my crab pot puller. I was concerned that when sliding these items into the lazarette, or when they shift around on rough water days, they might damage the bilge pump or the valve/fitting. What a mess that would be. So I designed up a sort of shield and fabricated it using King Starboard. Fits perfectly and can be easily lifted out because there are no fasteners. Photos:

Nicely done. When my R27 ob was surveyed for sale the surveyor wrote up a comment on the vulnerability of the through hull and plastic stainer. I had made sure my storage boxes steered clear but the advice was good.

Could be a good argument for a surveyor's look at a new boat before acceptance. A well trained and experienced third party look at such an installation would, I'm sure, be welcomed by RT.

It looks like you did a great job protecting your raw water seacock and bilge pump with a permanent, yet removable structure.

My R27OB always took on raw water despite efforts to trace and stop the infiltration. Accumulation would occurr in the center locker.

I always packed all (3) lockers with everything I could possibly need for comfort and emergencies. Not wanting anything to get damp from infiltration, I packed (2) sets of fenders in the "well" of my center locker, (2) A2 fenders and (2) G5 fenders (original equipment). These fenders were placed to protect raw water intake and bilge pump alike and did a remarkable job.

Life on a boat, unlike the square footage of a house, is measured in cubic inches!

Fantastic idea! Would be a good project for me to do while waiting on the delivery of my R27 (due in August). Did you by chance take any measurements that can be shared so I can built it and be ready to just "drop in" on the boats arrival?
Thanks in advance - Hank

Breaking that seacock would probably overwhelm the bilge pump, if it wasn't disabled in the same "even". That's a great mod.

Many have built shelves that sit atop the "wheel wells" in the hold. This would be a wise addition if they still store heavy items below the shelf. I don't due to the afore-mentioned seawater infiltration. Reach out if you'd like photos.
