Hi there,

We have a 2012 R29 with a Yanmar Engine. Can anyone tell me the operating temperature of this engine? We are finding ours can range from 193F and go as high as 207F while under load (3000 + RPM). We have a concern that the engine might be running hot. I would appreciate any feedback on running temperature for those who have the R29 with a Yanmar engine.

Thanks much,

Andrew

I am in the third season with this engine. It typically runs between 199 to 203° 203 or 204 is at 3600 RPMs. there is always a standard error of measure so your sensor might be off a bit. make sure you check the water flow. if you have more than 300 hours on the pump I would suggest replacing the impeller. hope that helps.

That does help. Thanks. We have approx. 420 hours on the engine and recently replaced the impellar at the start of this season (around 330 hours). Thanks for the feedback.

Andrew mine is a 2011 and runs in that same range

Just to add a bit more info to the other repies. The thermostat on your Yanmar for the coolant fresh water (radiator antifreeze) is set to open at 192 degrees. Hence, you should notice that as the engine temp increases, at around 193 degrees, the rate of temp increase should slow. At lower RPMs (say around 2000 to 2400), the temp should hover just over 192.

We have the same model and same year boat and our temp runs in exactly the same range. We did have some overheating issues early on, but found that several of the hose clamps were leaking coolant, along with the drain plug (coolant) at the engine. We tightened them all up and replaced the drain cock with a brass one and have been good to go ever since.

Andiamo is a 2012 model. We are on the Great Loop and run the boat nearly every day. We started in February and have done 3,500 miles. The engine temperatures described on these posts are exactly what we are experiencing.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Andrew

Our temperature runs the same. I heard that the Yanmar was designed to run hot to keep the emissions low. If you are used to the old diesels the temp does seem very high.

J & L Gray I really like your blog (?) about all the maintenance and repairs that you've done on Andiamo. I intend to refer to it in the future when I am working on the Aurora.

We have a 2007 Yanmar and at 3000 rpms we do 202 to 203 depending on the water temp. Here it's usually between 52 and 54 degrees. Of course it runs much hotter when I forget to open the valve (that's another story).

Larryberlin, the Yanmar head instructor at Mack boring east coast yanmar distributor says: run them hot and run them hard 3000 rpm at least once a month as that blows the carbon out and keeps the engine in good shape. babying t he engine by not running at high rpms say only 1250 for a long time can cause glazing of the cylinder walls-- which unlike for a cake , is not good. FYI larry reports there is a yan engine at HQ with over 10,000 yes 10,000 hours on it still going strong.

kaisardog, a yanmar fan (now on my 3rd one ) 😎
