We have an r23 which we love. We have it in the water close to our home in the South Sound and do a lot of day trips and overnighters. It's perfect as we are busy at work and cannot take a lot of time off. As we move forward we will be more flexible, will be able to take multiday trips and will move up in size for the all the obvious reasons: a Full Head, more space and better sea manners. The 23 is very noisy in chop and as we venture further north we would like a more stable ride. Your thoughts: The 27 with the speed to get out of trouble but an 8.5' beam v the 29 with 10' beam, and generally better quarters, but slightly slower speed. An advantage to the 27 would be that we could keep our current boathouse. The other considerations is engine reliability and cost of the boat. We would buy new or very lightly used. I would love to know any thoughts.
Thanks

We have an R29s that we have had for 3 years. before we decided on it, we considered the R27. The stability that comes with the extra beam was our deciding factor. The idea of the 27's speed is very appealing.
I don't think the reliability of a Volvo D4 diesel is a factor. They seem to be very reliable.

We love the room in the berth, and the made up bed. We have spent many nights aboard and it is very comfortable.

I understand that 27 has a very quiet cabin. Our 29 has some noise at cruise, but it certainly is not to loud for conversation.

That being said, I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

Best of luck with the shopping and enjoy the boat - no matter which one you choose.

My wife and I scheduled a factory visit to see the 27 and 29. We were pretty set on the 27 based on our internet research. When we finally stepped aboard both boats one of them really spoke to us. Loudly and clearly. Our new 29 gets delivered in September.

Your nautical mileage may vary.

Cheers,
Scott

We were in the same spot as Seamus about three years ago; I was leaning towards a new 27OB for the option of more speed, but my wife leaned to the 29/31 boats for comfort and seaworthiness. Fortunately, she won out and we ended up with a beauty of an R29 Classic (2011). I am 6'-6" and the headroom throughout the boat is very comfortable, as is sleeping in the v-birth. We very quickly got used to and now enjoy going slower - previous boat was a 28-foot Sea Ray express cruiser - as we are mostly retired and have the extra time. So far, we have not encountered any uncomfortable situations in Puget Sound waters from the aspect of ride and stability; it's a very comfortable and fun ride!

Bottom line is that we could not be happier with our 29.

We went from an inboard RT25 to a RT29S, and we are very happy with the noticeable increase in stability of the wider beam. The wider beam will deliver benefits pretty much in anything other than a flat sea, how often do you need that extra speed that the RT27 O/B offers?

That said, we don't have a boat house, and we don't trailer it...........

Good luck with your decision making process........

I will give you a brief response from an R27-OB owner. We're starting our 4th boating season in a 2019 model.

We got this boat because of the speed. All FM boats are well-made, feature rich, and ready to cruise. We cruise at 4800-4900 rpm (Suzuki 300 OB), and get 25-30+ mph. It's very comfortable trimmed out at that speed, and we get to our destination quickly. DESTINATION boaters.

There are a couple reasons we're considering moving up in size but down in speed to the R29S. Although the V-P D4 320 inboard will allow you to cruise at 15 mph, we still consider this a JOURNEY boat... and that's OK. My wife is re-training me!

A real bed accessible from two sides, not a v-berth platform, is a huge upgrade for us. But just as important as that bed is a dinghy that readily deployable with motor on (see Olsen davit vs Weaver davit). The RT davit frame for the R27 is a creative solution for an RIB, but it's not without compromise.

You'll enjoy whichever boat you go with, and you'll love the new Fluid Motion family you're joining... have fun in your decision making.
