I bought my 2015 R31CB last year. I have been having issue with the wipers, the mast light, the VHF radio and maybe some other issues. I finally spent a few hours on the mast head light and have nailed down a bad ground. My digital meter is deceptive because it reads 12 volts but as soon as you load the circuit the voltage goes to zero. My wipers start to move and then stall. My VHF radio turns on by itself and won't go on when I want it to. I think it may have taken out my stereo last year. Does anyone have any idea where to start looking? I had all six batteries replaced last spring when I bought it so it's possible the yard did not reconnect everything correctly. Any help is appreciated.

Hi John,

That's a hard one without being able to see the boat, but you are heading in the right direction. When something suddenly does not work as it used to, check what has changed since the last time that it did. So your hunch that things were not connected properly during the battery change is probably the right one. Grounds are critical so make sure they are all connected solidly. Best to have whoever did the replacement do this so they can check their work. Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Ralf

Start at the house bank battery ground. There should be 1 # 2 yellow ground cable connected to the battery house bank this goes to the aft ground buss. Confirm that theses cables are tight and installed properly. Inspect the ground buss for corrosion and looses connections. There will be a # 1 yellow attached to the aft ground buss this goes to the helm ground bus. Find this cable at the aft ground buss and check for full continuity using the Ohm meter. Clean and tighten the connections. If it has any resistance recheck connections. Then make the same test at the helm ground bus. There should be no resistance between the aft buss and helm bus ground. Inspect and clean all connections at the helm ground buss confirming clean tight connection as you did at the aft ground bus.

After doing the checks I believe you will have found the ground issue. My suspicions would be the main ground terminal at the battery and the connections at the aft ground bus.
