As I was excitedly watching this race unfold, it occurred to me that I had not seen anything about it on our website. It would be hard to believe that anyone living in the PNW does not know about this race but there may be many others that may not. No, you can not join this year as the race has already started as of Thursday June 4. Besides that, to participate in the race you would have to get a new boat-- the primary rule for the race is that the boat can not have any form of motor--it must be human powered.

The race is structured in two legs the first having been run Thursday. That was a qualifier that started in Port Townsend and ended in Victoria (40 mi.) The next leg started today at noon and continues all the way to Ketchican, AK. To get a feel for the boats and contestants you must go to the official website (racetoalaska.com) and view the promo video and review the rules. The idea is to take the boat of your choice (anything from a hi-tech trimaran to a kayak or windsurfer) all the way to Alaska without any outside help. The prize is only $10,000 first place and a set of steak knives for second so presumably there will be few, if any, of the big money, off-shore racers. The Karma of the race is incredibly cool. Once you start reading the sites and looking at the pictures you can't stop.

If I lived in that area (and didn't have to work), I would be in my tug heading for the Salt Spring Islands to watch this motly crew pass through. Should be fun to see.

Click r2ak.com then left-mid screen click 'full screen SPOT tracker' to see the live tracks of the boats. Click on the boat's icon for info on speed, location, type of boat, etc.

pretty cool,

dave
