We had the engine alarm sound off on the way to the fishing grounds the other day; it was rough so we trurned around and idled back to the dock. Then shut the Yanmar off. I noticed that the primary filter, a Racor 500 had air bubbles swirling around in it. So I bypassed the Racor, pulling off its hoses and inserting a double 1/2" nipple. End of engine alarm going off. I surmised that the housing of the Racor had cracked, or the gaskets were inserted poorly, or its supply line from the fuel tank had a hole, or loose hose clamps. Feeling flush, or foolish, I found a new Racor 500 (not the Chinese knock-off) in the local marine store and decided to purchase it. It was installed a little lower than the old one; the inlet hose to the tank was changed, with double hose clamps. But still the Racor 500 has air bubbles swirling around in the top area of the bottom sight bowl. Does anyone have a Racor 500 as your primary filter, and does your's have air bubbles too? I really like Racor 500s, they are easy to see and drain water from, and the top filter cartridges are $15 each. Thank you.

Today I decided to investigate the air bubbles in the Racor by changing the A1 fuel hose to the fuel tank to clear plastic (temporary). The clear hose is full of air bubbles! There must be a pin hole in the tube/pipe into the tank. Tomorrow I phone the mechanic.
