I am wondering what options would be to replace the existing raw water strainer on my new to me boat. The existing strainer looks very old and neglected, and I think may be cause of recent engine overheat. Filter in place looks to be Perko 493/500.

Thx
Scott

The Perko raw water strainer were used on earlier R-21, they are top of the line and all parts are available on Amazon and other marine outlets for rebuilding. The later model have a cheaper and smaller water strainer. If you are having a overheating issue I would check the water pump (impeller), then the exhaust elbow, as long as the screen is clean and the lid is not letting air in to the system I would look elsewhere. Good luck. Bob

Hey Scott,

I would agree with Bob above, if you are overheating and the strainer is sealed and clean I would replace the raw water impeller first. I replace my impeller on my boats every 100hrs or every other season to keep it fresh and worry free. Also when I replace my impeller, if it still is in decent condition I keep it as a good spare in case something happens and cycle them out every 100hrs or every other season. Hope this helps!

Thanks,

I have a 2014 R21EC so different engine than yours but the strainer is a VENTUS,,,,Type 140,,made in Holland. I would agree with the other comments and unless the strainer is partially plugged your overheating issue is probably from the impeller or partially blocked hoses or other components of the raw water coming system.
