Hello all,

Our new to us 2009 Ranger 21EC with 170 hours on her has an interesting issue. At idle, there is no water coming out of ehhaust, maybe a few drops. However, once revs kick up to about 1500 or so water stream comes out OK. At 2200 RPM there is a good flow of water but also quite a bit of constant steam coming out as well.

Sea strainer is clean and impeller looks to be in good shape. No overheating alarm either.

What could be the issue?

Thank you.

Exhaust Elbow fouled, sea water inlet fouled?
I would put my money on the exhaust elbow !

I would change the impeller. Even though it looks good it could be slipping on its bushing, (if it has one).

Sounds crazy but first make sure the raw water intake valve is FULLY open. Trust me on this. Otherwise is sounds like the exhaust elbow or the heat exchanger may be partially clogged especially if the water pump impeller is in good shape. Get some Barnacle Buster and run it though the system. It needs to “pickle” a few hours once in the system but you’ll be amazed as what it can flush out.
Cheers,
Karl

One thing to check is the line from the through hull fitting under the floor by the door and the line from it to the strainer. Mine was pinched under the liner and flow was restricted. Follow the line back with your hand and make sure it is not caught under the liner. It should run to the starboard side and bend around under the engine bed. Mine went straight back and was caught when the liner was lowered into the hull.

Just for your information: Elbow, Mixing part #124070-13520. Hatton Marine supply
Phone #(206) 283-5501 good luck with your repair, if you have any questions just call or PM. Bob
