"Honey, I want to spend a month in Italy this summer."

"Uh, how about a month on our boat in Canada instead? That's a foreign country, right? It'll be cheaper, including having the boat shipped. Uh, maybe?"

This is, of course, an apples-to-oranges comparison and to maintain marital bliss, the answer should be "both", but here is the breakdown.

Round trip airfare SF-Rome $3k/each. Based on various websites, minimum $10k for travel and hotels in Italy for four weeks. Total budget minimum $16k. Probably more given my spouse's tastes.

Ship R29CB round trip from SF to Seattle area $5k. Driving costs (one long day each way) $500. Assume anchoring out half the time: $600 for marinas. Eating out and shopping in two lovely "foreign" cities of Victoria and Vancouver: $1k. Renting a house in Desolation Sound with a dock for 5 days of getting off the water: $1500. Food and miscellaneous: $1k. Assuming 600 nm travel at average 2.5 gal/nm: $1k in fuel. Total budget: less than $11k.

The point of this highly inaccurate accounting effort is to remind fellow tugnuts who have given up the towing lifestyle for a bigger boat, you can still rationalize extended touring by saying "it is cheaper than going to Europe for a month"*. This even applies if you ship it across the country. And our boat spends the rest of its life on the waterfront in San Francisco ($400/month) as our budget condominium in one of the more expensive, but fun, cities in North America.

Boats bring out the art of rationalizing the absolutely irrational. That is my contribution.

Jeff

*and for those worried about the seemingly large carbon footprint of shipping the boat and living on it, you will be pleased to know that it is less than going to Europe for a month.

Sitting at the Admiral's table every night is priceless.....
