Hi there,

I have been experiencing diesel fuel exiting from the fuel tank via the vent located at the stern.

I have taped it up to prevent leakage while moored which I presume is a result of the water movement?

The diesel fuel then solidifies and leaves a very hard to remove rust coloured film which is extremely difficult to remove.

Appreciate your help and guidance.

hello Keith,

What year is your boat?

There are many post related to this subject on the forum. from what I have read, he vent often have a kink or a wrong angle in the line and when the tank is getting low in fuel, the fuel being tossed around goes up the vent. Many made a mod to make sure that there are no kink in the fuel vent hose. Some even showed how they did it with pictures. Do a quick search on the forum using ( r21 fuel vent) the info will show up.

I have a 2012 and have not experience this so far.

The fuel vent line runs from port to starboard. This line should be as straight as possible and have no low point for fuel to dwell/settle in. Sine this vent line is around 6-feet long it's not easily supported to be straight and sloping from the vent port back to the port side of the fuel tank. Because of this the line can and should be supported at two spots if possible to aid having the line slope continuously to the port side. On my 2016 R-21EC this vent line is supported at its mid point with a block of starboard to aid with keeping the line sloping down all the way from starboard to port. This block was installed by Ranger Tugs during the boat's assembly.

Thank you so much for the detailed information.
Much appreciated.
My Tug is a 2013 R-21EC.
I will take your recommendations and get back on the outcome.
Regards

Keith

I have a RE 21, 2012 model, and have experienced the same problem with diesel fuel spills. Thanks for the advice, I will try straighten tings out....

baz is correct about venting from port to starboard, if the boat is a newer model. His solution works. The older ones had a short vent line that went out the port side. My 2009 model lost a lot fuel thru that port vent, whether the tank was full or not. I modified things and ran the longer line from port to starboard; and installed a new vent port on the starboard side. Took care of the problem. I wrote several posts about the issue.

My 2014 R21EC is like baz's. No problems with the vent.

Yes, once you get the vent line to gently rise from the top of the tank to the vent fitting (with absolutely no low spots) the fuel burping out the vent will cease. Keep us posted.
