The rear thruster on my R27 does not engage or only for short bursts when toggled to star board. It does this using the remote as well. Also it does short bursts on its own with no one touching the controls. Is this a solenoid problem?

Hello nestegg,

I would first inspect the thruster motor and connections by removing the bait well in the cockpit below the aft seat. There will be a positive and negative large gauge wire attached to the motor, as well as a wire with a connector on it. If there is any water present, or signs of corrosion, you'll need to clean all connections and retest. If this is not the issue, it could be a problem with the switch panel, or the connections below the switch panel.

Give me a call in the office with any questions.

Yes, check the connections, but I suspect your problem is either the joy stick or the relay. There are troubleshooting directions on the sidepower webside. After confirming all connections are solid, I would first jump out the connections at the joystick and see that the thruster works towards starboard and port consistently. If it does then it is your joystick, a pretty expensive item. If it does not work properly then check the connection the same way at the plug located in the stern. Yes, there is a connector back there, at least on my 2011. If you have the same symptoms then it is most likely the relay and not the connections. You will have to remove the thruster and remove the shroud to do further troubleshooting. I suggest you take the thruster home and you can hook it up to your car battery with booster cables. Once you have done that and have a jumper wire handy and a multimeter call side power tech support. Explain that it is the rear thruster on a diesel powered Ranger Tug. This is significant because the casing on the thruster is an explosion proof enclosure for gas powered boats and they will normally not let you service it because they are required to test the integrity after disassembly. The rear thruster troubleshooting is somewhat different than what is published so that is why I suggest that you call them and their tech support will talk you through it. A new relay is about $125.00 from Defender Marine.
