Visibility when turning and backing is one of the issues that I have with the Ranger Tugs, due to the helm being inside the enclosed cabin. So, I've added rear view mirrors.

At the Ft. Myers Beach Rendezvous - Feb 2012, several people asked me about the rear view mirrors that I have attached to the front railing just outside the pilot and navigator's windows. If anyone is interested in a source for these stainless steel mirrors and clamps, then check out these links:

I purchased from Amazon with Global Parts, Inc as the supplier. I chose 6" for port side (since it is farther from the helm) and 5" for starboard side, but you could pick whatever size works for you.

I like your idea, but since I'm a "visual learner", can you post a pic or two?

thanks,
John

Thank you...those look nice, not to big to be in the way, but able to do the job.

I have something similar, rectangular mirrors with suction cup swivel mounts that I stick right in the upper corners of the side windows. This is less permanent, but has the slight advantage that they are inside of the rails, and being closer I get a wider view. I did have one fall off once, but they cost less than $15 each so what the heck.
I don't know what the make is, I picked them up at a local chandlery here in West Vancouver.

Hi friends,

I am finding this thread quite pertinent currently.

San Diego Harbor is often crowded, and is narrower than I am used to in the Puget Sound and southern BC areas, so am struggling to watch everywhere. I love my 25SC, including the wood walls of the head and the convenience of the dinghy, but both items definitely limit what I can see.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary boats I have ridden on in Puget Sound and down here have a second level such as the Ranger 31, or the head is on a lower level, which provides better views. I am very happy with my boat. I just want to improve my views of what is around me.

The military and police boats as well as many private boats travel very fast in this narrow area and before I try mirrors I am wondering if any more ideas might be out there 😀

Thanks in advance,

You can connect a rear facing camera to the Garmin

Thanks John,

Been researching the rear view improvement options...just ordered your recommendations!

Those mirrors look great - just what I've been envisioning for my boat! Thanks for the idea and the pics. Just placed my order too.

Thanks for the links.
Just placed my order. These will save tension on the neck and back while cruising the ICW.

Our R25 has a neat rear facing camera and a dinghy mounted on Walker Davits - I like them both, but I did get tired of the view of the inside of the dinghy thru the camera monitor.

Mirrors seemed easier than putting the camera up higher. I have the same Amazon mirrors and brackets mentioned several times above. Originally, I mounted them on the sides - but they make the boat beamer and harder to get into slips - so now they are above the rails and make it slightly harder to go forward.

My next boat will have a 14' beam like my last boat. 🙂 But, it won't be nearly as attractive or maneuverable as our R-25. The mirrors are fine.

Better Pictures, sorry some are sideways. I couldn't figure out how to get them straight. I did the rotate thing in edit, but I think it has something to do with the picture being taller than wide.
