I completed two upgrades in the last month. The first was installing permanent screens that I built from screens, screen frame material and hardware from home depot.

The second was a little scarier, cutting out the deck to gain better access to the front of the engine to replace the front shaft seal. The shaft seal was successfully replaced after much cursing and I modified the cutout to make a permanent access port.

Beautiful work! Something like that would make changing the raw water pump impeller on our 27 a breeze. I might steal your idea, but could only dream of your workmanship.

Doug: What engine brand (Yanmar or Cummins) do you have ? From my R-25 days, it does not look like the Yanmar 4BY2-150 HP engine.

Baz,

I have a Yanmar 4jh3-dte 125 HP. It's a great engine. Only a few of the very early R-25s had them.

Please clarify. Was it the crankshaft seal or coolant pump seal that you were replacing? How many hours on the engine?

It was the crankshaft oil seal. Around 900 hours and the engine is nine years old. It looked like just normal wear on the old seal.

On the pump topic, when I took training the guys at Mack Boring said that the fresh water cooling pump almost never fails. The raw water pump everyone knows about the impellers but there is actually a weep hole and if you see water dripping out it's time to replace the seals on that.
