On the R 31 and R29, the VHF Display Screen is below and to the left of the helm where you really can't see it without getting out of the helm seat and leaning down. On board GIZMO, my R 31CB, I modified the dashboard to put the VHF to the right of and near the top of the Garmin navigation screen. I started to put a photo of the result here but this web site has chosen to make that very, very difficult. So I'll describe what I did.

I removed the VHF and covered the hole in the dash with a thin oak panel. I moved the Windlass Control, the 12V plug and the Engine Indicator light from the lower right side of the dashboard and installed them in the oak panel where the VHF was. To do so, I had to lengthen several single conductor wires with butt connectors.

Next, I used a 3 1/2" hole saw from the back to cut a hole for the Volvo Penta panel centered to the right of the autopilot panel where the windlass control and the 12 v plug used to be. This left a 3 1/2" hole above the autopilot panel.

Using a reciprocating 'Skil' saw I cut a rectangular hole for the VHF that, when installed, covered the 3 1/2" hole where the Volvo Penta panel was.

I found that all of the wires from the VHF and the Volvo Penta panel that had multi-conductor molded plugs had enough slack that they would reach to their new locations so the only re-wiring necessary was single conductor wires.

If you would like to see photos of the resulting installation, email me at stanstumbo@comcast.net.
