Removing generator

My R-27 has the 2.7 KW Mase generator that is started 3 or 4 times a year to check fit and function, but otherwise not used. My boat is on a fresh water lake and I'm rarely away from the yacht club for longer than a single overnight. I don't need the generator, it takes up valuable storage space and the weight contributes to the ever present list to port. Should I remove and store it...has anyone done that?

Phil,
Here is an idea. Before you pull it out why not see if you can sell it? Storing it in case a subsequent buyer may want it may not be a good move especially if it sits around for years. You can market the boat as Genset ready.

You and the guy in the post wanting to add a gen set should talk. Perhaps you could help each other out.

Can't make up my mind on this one. Maybe I should just trade my boat for a 29' without a generator 🙂

I really think you should not get rid of the generator as there is a lot of added value there when you decide to trade in your boat, and you will not get the value selling it. Letting it sit out of the boat I would talk to a diesel mechanic and find out the best way to store it, I would think it could be stored for a while if kept in a dry place. Trading up to a 29 makes the most sense 🙂
good luck

I think you should leave the generator in. I carry my Honda 2000 and only have used it 3 times, but I wouldn't take it off the boat. If you only use the boat on overnights how much storage could you need? I stay on the boat for months and I use that locker for my Honda, tools and spare oil, antifreeze and other fluids. I am sure with a little rearranging of things and a more criticle eye on what you really need aboard you can leave the generator in.

OK...I'm convinced. The generator stays in.

Could be difficult....I owe about 135K on my R-27.
