We are changing the name of our new to is Ranger 27 Classic. Any tips for removing vinyl letters from the hull without damaging the finish?

Thanks

Gentle heat with a blow drier should do the trick. Re-wax after removing. if putting new vinyl down clean off wax first, then wax after applying.

Yes to gentle heat. WD40 can loosen residual
adhesive, then follow with plenty of denatured
alcohol before putting on new letters.

You guys are the EXPERT for this question....
Our Tug is Coast Guatd registered. Do we also have to register it in Alaska ? I know we'll have to buy a license tag for the trailer, but unsure about boat.
Thanks
Don and Margaret

I am by no means an expert so take this with a grain of salt. The broker who handled the sale of our boat (Sailing, Inc. in Seward) advised us that you can have either type registration, but it is illegal to have both. We are registering our boat with the Coast Guard and our dinghy with the state. She said that people often forget about the dinghy, but you can get fined if no registration. Hope this helps.

Actually, documenting with the Coast Guard, is almost equivalent to titling the boat in a particular state. It deals with ownership issues and has certain advantages over a state issued title, but it doesn’t mean exemption from state registration and taxation. You will need to register your boat in the state it’s mostly used..

Well... Kind of. Check with your specific state to see if your local regulations are different.

Speaking strictly for what I researched about dinghy in Washington state, you do not have to register your dinghy as long as it is used as a tender to your mother ship.

Now, whose interpretation of being used as a tender is 100% open for interpretation. If you use your dinghy strictly to get back and forth to shore, fine, as long as your mother ship is within visible range. But if you are island hoping.... Use your own judgement there.

Here’s a link to the State of Alaska DMV page that states that documented vessels are exempt from state registration:

Also here’s some info from Coast Guard National Documentation Center in regard to dinghies:

“Documentation of your vessel does not cover the vessel's tender or dinghy. These craft fall within the jurisdiction of the motorboat numbering laws of the state of principal use. Please contact your state agency that handles the registration or numbering of motorboats for further information

Hope this helps.

As for the vinyl letters. I used a heat gun on low and plastic razor blades. A lot faster than a blow dryer.

Goo gone at Walmart or other stores works great.
