Today I received an offer (a scam if you ask me) from Specialized Yacht Services Inc., Babylon, NY 11702-9822. This offer was to give them authorization to renew my USCG Certificate of Documentation at a cost of $75.00. 😱
As most should know this annual renewal can be done free of charge by simply filling in the (Substitute) CG-1280 (REV. 06/04) form and submitting it via facsimile mail to 304-271-2405. The form can be d/l from http://www.uscg.mil/hq/cg5/nvdc/nvdcforms.asp when clicking on either a Word or PDF links under Renewal of Certificate Of Documentation.. (CG-1280) section. Using the Word formatted form one can easily enter the necessary info and fax it in without too much effort. Maybe 5 mins of your time is required to perform the annual renewal -- so no need to pay $75 to some outfit to do this amount of work (at an outrageous rate of $900/hour).
