I am considering changing my 50' of chain plus 200' of line for full 200' of chain on my 2019 31CB.

My estimate is this will add 500 lbs to the bow weight. I am mounting a hard side dingy and motor on the swim platform with a total weight of approximatel 150 lbs, which will offset some.

I am curious if anyone has made this swap or has any comments.

Thank you,
Keith

I did when I had my R29, did not notice much difference, what size chain? I think your weight est. may be off.

5/16" chain G4 galvanized is slightly less than 120lbs per 100 feet. 150 lbs on the swim platform will be fine on a R31. I had a Gala 270 aluminum rib 112 lbs and a 9.9 mercury 2 stoke outboard on my C26 Cutwater. The motor was mounted to the cockpit rail and the boat was on the platform mounted by weaver davits. Yes it was a bit too heavy for my C26 with 8.6 beam. I don't think it would be an issue with a R31.

We replaced the factory rode with 150' 5/6 G4 Hi-Test chain and 150' of 8 plait rope. This style of rope flakes nicely in the anchor locker. We purchased the chain and rope from Defender and had them do the chain to rope splice.

You will have to knock down the chain stack every 30 feet or so, as the chain locker is not very deep. But, even when we had the factory 50' of chain, we still had to deal with chain stacking.

I think the RT31 normally rides bow high when at speed, so the extra weight in the bow was helpful.

We are happy with this change.

Thanks for the prompt response and the info on the weight.

Curious as to why you would want so much chain. Granted more chain aids in anchoring, but all chain seems like overkill and a lot of added weight. I replaced my rode with 8 plait and was able to add a considerable amount more to get additional scope. Had a 30 pound Manson Supreme, which is similar to Rocna. Ten years of anchoring everywhere, even the PNW, never dragged.

When anchoring near old choral and sharp rocks, all chain is good insurance against chaffing. In the end, I think it is whatever makes you sleep best at night. I had 200 feet of chain from my last boat, so I now use this on my R31CB.
