Replacement parts for yanmar diesels

😀 Has anyone found a good supply outlet for replacement engine parts, specifically a 3GM30F Yanmar 27 hp.? I am having a dickens of a time finding something as simple as a gasket for the exhaust mixing elbow where it bolts to the water cooled manifold. Its a square gasket with 4 bolt holes. Joe

If you can't find a gasket, sometimes you can make one.

Get material, place the material on the item to be sealed, lightly tap the material around the edges and holes of the item to make an impression in the material, cut along the impressions with a razor blade. Doesn't work well with metal gaskets, hard to make impressions and hard to cut.

😀 Thanks for the feed-back Gene. Yes, I have used that technique for making paper gaskets. However, this is the metal coated gasket for the mixer elbow where it is bolted to the manifold. I have since contacted a parts distributer in the Seattle area and have one on the way. As you probably read, I have been having difficulty starting our 3GM30F in the cooler/cold temps and have found multiple reasons for this. In my quest for knowledge re these diesel critters, I have been hearing about the tendency for the mixing elbow, where the exhaust gases are mixed with the raw water flow, to become restricted causing a hard start condition. So....while waiting for other parts, I decided to pull this elbow off and check it. Turned out to be fine but am now waiting for the gasket to remount it. I am thinking I should also check out the heat exchanger while I am at it. While this engine only has 550 hours on it, she was birthed in 1993 and probably needs a good general physical. It is a sad thing that Yanmar didn't include glow plugs when designing the GM series. Joe

I had a four cylinder Yanmar in our Albin; it had 490 hours on it the first winter in Northern AL. It didn't have glow plugs. It never had a starting problem. I could leave it for a couple of weeks in 20 degree temperatures (and dipping below 20 on occasion) and it would start almost instantly. Maybe a max of two revolutions.

I wonder where the problem lies? Maybe, when all is sorted out your starting problem will disappear. Actually, I prefer an engine without glow plugs. They're just something else to go wrong. My R21EC engine doesn't like cold weather. If I don't run it for a week or so, I have to use the glow plugs. 🙁

Gene, I know this isn't on course with the subject of this thread but in response to your's let me mention that I spoke with a fella by the name of Norm at MER a yanmar parts distributer in the Seattle area. He was very helpful and a great guy to talk to. He mentioned that the 3GM30F's don't like cold temps. He suggested using a hair dryer to warm up the injectors prior to starting. It really seems to do the trick. Maybe there is some mechanical difference between the diesel engine you had and the 3GM30F's that made it easier to start in cold temps. I really don't have much experience in this field. Fair winds , Joe
