We currently have the small refrigerator in the cockpit of our R31, but are interested in swapping it out for an icemaker. Has anyone undertaken this modification or have any thoughts on the feasibility/intelligence of this idea?

A few specific questions come to mind:
-What brand/model icemaker is usually installed by the factory (as an option)?
-Is the cutout for the standard icemaker the same (or larger/smaller) than that required for the icemaker?
-Can the icemaker be powered by battery/inverter , or does it require a generator?

Thanks All!

Allan,

The ice maker is actually smaller then the AFT fridge so there is not enough to mount the ice maker. You also need to run water and power to the area where it would be located. The ice maker also only works on shore power or generator power. Let me know if you have any questions and feel free to email me.

Thank you,

Thanks to both of you for the advice. Sounds like the countertop appliance would be a good alternative to swapping out the fridge.

We replaced the factory supplied Novacool refrigerator with a Novacool Freezer - it fits in the exact same cutout, but it is deeper (as there is plenty of space in the step area). It served us well on a trip to Alaska this summer. You can use the countertop appliance to make ice, bag it, and store it in the somewhat larger freezer -- it works very well. Very easy install

just another idea. could be useful to run in the marina. when you get to the boat, you will have ice for the day

I have been using one of these on the boat for a couple of years, they work pretty good. It does not store the ice, the ice will melt in the storage basket and return to the water reservoir. You need to remove the cubes as they are made and put them in the freezer.
