I believe that the shear pin on my stern thruster broke yesterday (we have an R-27). I've read about what a big job it is to access the thruster to fix this problem. However, coincidentally we are having the boat hauled out next week. Is there any chance that the pin can be replaced from the outside while to boat is out of the water? Also where can I get the replacement part?

No, not from the outside, but there's an excellent thread on how it's replaced here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2013&start=0&hilit=shear+pin

You'll be able to get a replacement shear pin either from Sidepower or from Ranger Tugs.

Use Google or email Andrew.

EDIT: In fact if you go to the 4BY2150 & 180 xls spreadsheet on the top left of the homepage, you'll find it on line 39: SM32050 @ $4.05.
Why not buy two! 😉

If you don't have a shear pin, check your bow thruster. On mine there was a spare in a clip attached to the motor. They are the same -- front and rear -- on mine.

They are cheap, buy a dozen! Sell them at rendezvous to other tug owners at a very high markup!!

Fun job, best wishes.

Look in your manuals, mine spare was in with them in a small ziplock. Unlabeled, so I did not know what it was until I needed it.

As Dave said, it has to be replaced from the inside. I hope you are thin with long arms. Check all the pictures o. This site for many details on changing the rear stern thruster pin.
