Hello all,

I am the proud owner of a 2018 R29CB we took delivery of this past week! I’ll probably have many questions as I come up to speed with the systems and look to leverage the wisdom of those who have gone before me with RT’s. My first question that I didn’t see any answers to already in the forums is what is required to change an LED bulb for one of my underwater lights? I have the bulb, but am not sure if this has to be done with the boat out of the water, or if there is any way to swap out a bulb without paying for a haul out? I don’t have any need to take it out of the water now (and hopefully not for a while), but can wait until then if necessary—just thought I’d ask if anyone has done this before.

If they are installed like they are on my 31, you could do it in the water, but you are going to get wet... there is enough extra wire that you could unbolt it from the trim tab and cut the cable ties and pull it up out of the water to work on it, even if you have to rewire from inside the hull it would still be doable as the wires pass through above the water line... doesn't sound like a fun winter project though.

arent they a sealed unit? you dont replace the LED. you replace the whole unit thats attached to the trim tab.

considerably easier when the boat is out of the water. especially as new units are likely to have their own cable and will need to be connected inside the boat.

Hello again all,

I have the replacement light unit, and they do look like they are a sealed unit that you replace at once. In the box, there is also a fuse housing to include inline when installing the new unit. Does anyone here, or from the factory, know where that fuse is in the factory installation? I'd like to simply check/change the fuse in there first before I go through removal/replacement of the entire light fixture. Also, on a slightly different topic, but related, the new unit shows how to use power switch cycling to trigger light color changes. Do these lights actually change color, or would we need a separate controller? Thanks all!

guess it depends on what unit you bought. I've see some that if you cycle the power quickly you can change the color. depends on the chip inside the unit.

im interested to know where the fuse is too.

I need to replace my underwater lights on a 2012 Cutwater 28. Can you tell me where you found the replacement unit and what brand it is?

Hi all,

As already mentioned, the light does not have an actual bulb, but is a sealed unit that has to be replaced as one piece. As also already mentioned, you could try to replace it by removing the zip tie that holds the wire in place, and that should give you enough reach to to the replacement out of the water. But you definitely will get wet, as you won't be able to do this while laying on the swim platform. 😉

Not sure about the power cycling on your replacement unit. Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Ralf
