Has anyone retro-installed a trolling valve on a 110 Yanmar? I've been using a kicker engine mounted on the swim platform controlled with an extended handle --- which can become interesting in chop/swells while working the down riggers and poles. Before I check with a boat shop during their busy season -- wondered if a fellow Tugnut had any ideas/experience.

Hello fellow fisherman,

I am in the process of adding many useful fishing additions to my 2012 25SC. I'm not sure if we share the same transmission model number or not, but as far as adding a trolling valve to my transmissioin, it's a very good way to go, very easy installation. My boat in idle now goes between zero - 3.5 knots and anywhere in between with a twist of the vernier type cable (like a prop or mixture control on a small airplane).

We can talk about why I chose a trolling valve over an outboard if you'd like, feel free to ask me any questions through PM or more preferably another post here so others may gather the info as well.

Pictures of my trolling valve installation (along with rod storage rack, and autopilot installation) are in my photo album, just click on my name. Some useful install tips are in there as well with each picture.

I can't quote you a price because prices change ( but expect to pay around $1,000 all said and done), but I highly recommend you go through Richard at Ranger Tugs, he'll get you all set up with everything you need for a competitive price and factory knowledge (and maybe even a matching can of Yanmar paint!).

If your transmission is different that the models installed on the later model boats and you have the option of going electronic trolling valve vs mechanical, you want the mechanical for a few reasons. Less expensive, more reliable, and better fine tuning.

Do you know if this type of Mod can be done to the Cummins QSD150 2009 Who would I contact for such parts? Tks

T@MH,

I don't know about the transmission that came with the engine you have. I'd start by calling Richard at Ranger. He should be able to get you pointed in the right direction. Make sure you have the xmsn model and serial number prior to calling.

I have a trolling valve on my 25sc and have found it to be of questionable value unless you are using it in a current free/ wind free environment. That being said I should include the fact I use the boat mostly in the ocean. The ability to mantain directional stability while you use it in less than perfect conditions is marginal. You might have more luck trolling uphill agains the current or against the wind. Slowing the boat for salmon fishing, around 1-2 knots for kings and 2-4 knots for silvers has more to do with the relative speed of the bait movement through the water rather than the speed of the boat as it is measured. Just something to think about.
