What is the typical setting for fuel calibration for the Yamaha F300? Previous owner had the calibration set to +7%. Seems high compared to my other Yamahas.

My fuel usage has always been pretty accurate, although it calculates about 1% more fuel used than was actually used. I've never set the Fuel Flow Offset (which is where I think this is done) so I don't know what the actual value is for my boat but will check on it next time I'm at the boat and report back.

Mine is usually accurate within less than 1 gallon. If I run the kicker, which bypasses the Garmin chartplotter, the delta tells me how much fuel the kicker actually used.

I agree with Martin 100%. On our trip to Alaska, we ran over 3400 miles. The fuel flow was never off more then a gallon or two due to running the kicker trolling for salmon.

I'm assuming that the OP is referring to the offset in the Garmin? If that's the case, I believe that offset is to be used if you find that the Yamaha display to be off for any number of reasons.

My Yamaha display, like others in this post, is spot-on. When it says that I've used 40 gallons, for instance, it takes 40 gallons to top off the tank. So, in my case, I have my Garmin offset at zero. If it took 42 gallons to top off, I would set the offset at 5%, and so on...

Side note though: For an unknown reason, it will sometimes 'reset' to 7%. I have no rhyme nor reason for this 'reset'. If I find this has happened, I just reset the Garmin offset to zero. Kinda irritating though.

I just checked the setting on my Garmin and it reads 0%.

On my last trip to Alaska I burned 1600 gallons in total. At the start of the trip I filled the tank completely and set the fuel on board to 150 gallons. During the trip I only used the "Add Fuel" setting and put in the actual amount added. The fuel on board reported by the Garmin after fully refueling gradually decreased from 150 gallons at the start of the trip to 134 gallons over the course of the trip. So at the end, my Garmin thought I had 134 gallons on board (even though I had added enough fuel to fill the tank completely and in actuality the fuel on board was 150 gallons). So 150 -134 = 16 gallons discrepancy over a total usage of 1600 gallons equals 1% error.

You all make me jealous - the Garmin on my R23 (with Yamaha 200) is WAY off. The boat only holds 80 gallons, and even within one tank, it is off by many gallons. Usually when I go to refuel, I have to add quite a bit more than it reports). I top it off entirely and use the Garmin to tell it that the tank is full (and it is correctly configured with the correct capacity), but it is just wrong. I think even if I set it to 7% (the max) it would still be off.

I have read a few threads on this forum about calibration, but they seemed like they were for Volvo engines. Anybody got any advice on how to calibrate the Yamaha/Garmin setup?

I'm always astounded when I need to put in +/- a few gallons off of what the Garmin thinks I need to top up.

The fuel gauge only really reads accurate (for us) while on plane... but the "consumed" fuel on the Garmin is spot on

Thanks all. I should have been more specific. The offset referenced is the fuel calibration offset in the Yamaha 6yc. It may have "reset itself" to the 7%, because I didn't do it, and I'm pretty sure the previous owner didn't do it consciously, he wasn't very technical. It seemed off on my first fill up, and seems a bit off now, hence how I found the 7%.

Will recalculate actual at next fill up and reset.

Mine is set to 0pct in the 6yc display.
