I find this DAVIS rudder position indicator very helpful with slow speed manuvering in close quarters.
My EC-21 steering wheel has a removable center hub which makes installation and alignment very easy.

I would not recommend this indicator for tugs equipped with an autopilot device. The problem is that, when engaged, the autopilot controls the rudder position without rotating to the wheel on which the indicator is mounted. This means that the indicator goes out of calibration with each use of the autopilot.

As Osprey points out, if you have a boat with BOTH hydraulic steering AND an AP with its own hydraulic pump, then the DAVIS RPI will not work properly. If you have hydraulic steering WITHOUT an AP then it will work fine. If you have a Raymarine Sportpilot-type of AP, it will work fine.

The Davis instrument is actually a nifty bit of kit. I have one on my 21EC AND I have an AP, but since the AP turns the helm to work (Sportpilot-type), the Davis RPI works great. I really like mine.

Fair Winds and Indicated Rudders,
