We have had our new Ranger Tug 23 for three weeks now. I have a week’s vacation coming up and am planning our first real cruise from Fort Lauderdale down to Miami and the upper Florida Keys and back. My question is what safety equipment do you usually carry on similar voyages? (Besides the bare USCG reqirements) Also what other equipment/toys do you find useful?

spare handheld vhf
water
comfortable inflatable lifejackets
air horn
sunscreen
first aid kit
tools (+emergency tape and bungs and collection of zip ties, a range of stainless hose clamps, spare fuel filter and oil filter, spare engine belts, water strainer cover (if inboard engine), spare transmission fluid, oil, coolant)
rubber gloves
boat manuals
flashlights
dinghy

All the above plus floating EPIRB.

That’s a good list including the EPIRB from another post. Have all except the dinghy. What kind of dinghy do you have or recommend?

emergency strobe, whistle, signal mirror, for each life vest
chemlights
emergency vhf antenna on suction base
extra fire extinguisher
throw rope in bag
very sharp fixed blade knife to cut lines in emergency
space blanket
polarfleece blanket (if someone gets wet & needs warming up; or other fiber that insulates when wet)
couple hanks of light polypro line
extras sets of dock lines in case of a big blow
energy bars

With the RT-23 it’s problematic to put an inflated dinghy on the swim platform the way those of us with inboard diesels do. Lots of prior threads about inflatables, kayaks, folding boats, inflatable kayaks, etc. for use on the outboard RT models.
Your specific personal requirements for boat to shore transportation (besides the safety aspect of having a dinghy) and your on boat storage preferences will probably guide you to a product that works best for you.

That is good advice. So far I don’t see a need for a dinghy at all since I can drive this little gem right onto the beach. Might add a kayak. If we go farther out an inflatable liferaft might make sense.

for me the dinghy is more about if you have a hull breach and need somewhere to get into that isnt the water. - catastrophic sinking scenario.

kayak works on an R23. not sure its critically required but i def feel comfort having something back there.
