Does anyone have any suggestions about installing safety netting around the cockpit to further protect little children? Thanks

You can have a canvas person make up panels to lash to the rails to fill the void. Unfortunately you will also loose a lot of areas to tie things like lines to. The good thing is the kids will grow and then you can get rid of them! The canvas that is.

knotflying,

Your clarification of whether to keep the canvas or the kids, reminded me of an experience I had years ago on a Hunter 27 I owned...
It had a very open transom and when I had few in-laws aboard for a relaxing but crowded cockpit sail on an breezy day. My sister-in-law (always a very tighly twisted, never a thought un-said sort of gal) decided she should point out that "boats are for fools that have no sense of a dollars value, it's almost negligent to allow children on boats, does this thing always tip so dangerously (5 deg heel?), etc...etc..." She especially was concerned about falling over the side or especially being washed over the open transom and out to sea. I explained, "should that happen (while suppressing the urge to prove her right) her life jacket would save her from sinking and that the low transom and its folding ladder would allow for easy re-boarding (probably against the wishes of the rest of my "crew")". That didn't help much because I'm sure she saw the look in my eye and was certain that I'd just sail away without her. I decided to show her my daughter's harness and life line we used when she was small...that gave my sister-in-law the idea that a "tether" for her would be a good idea. I tied a length of 1/2" braid into a loop with a slipknot and handed it to her, mentioning that she should be careful not to allow it to become tangled. Then I turned and tied the other end to a handy cleat. When I turned back ...she had the loop around her neck!!...
As I began to tell her to put it around her waist my father-in-law tapped me on the arm, shook his head, grinned, and loudly said,...(I'll never forget his exact words)...
"Well, thats all well taken care of,...now, lets all see how fast this thing can go!!".

True story.

Go to "Westmarine.com" and click on "safety". Then type in "lifeline netting". It's intended for cable lifelines but I'm sure you will be able to figure out how to rig it to your rail tubes. Works great for kids, but not intended for a sister in law.

Hear me laughing from New Jersey!!!

We haven't found a need for safety netting and our son has been on board our R25 since he was 2, he is 6 now. We do make sure that anytime he is in the cockpit he is wearing his life jacket though. I would think the only place it was really needed would be at the port and starboard entrances to the cockpit, since kids like to hang over the side and touch the water there. Anywhere else is pretty decently protected already.

Jack, got any pictures of that episode?

Charlie
