SC 25 THRUSTER---NO POWER SHEAR PIN???

Hello All (again)

I ran the thruster yesterday for about 10 seconds. I noticed the sound changed and it didn't seem seem to work. I tried it for a few more seconds and I could hear motor noise? but the sound was indeed different and again no function.

Reading more I think there is an issue with the shear pin. Does this sound reasonable? If so must the boat come out of the water for repair?


Any other ideas what else could be causing the problem. I've ruled out fuse failure because I can still here motor noise.

If the motor is operating it sounds like the shear pin. The motor needs to be removed, the boat does not have to pulled out of the water. You didn’t say if it’s the bow or rear thruster. Process is the same just the bow is easier to get to. Search this site and Imtra on how it’s done.

Also think it sounds like a shear pin. Look in your manual to see how the disassembly and reassembly goes. If you do not have a manual simply Google the brand/model number and add online owners manual and you should be able to find a free pdf of your unit. I've taken out a bow thruster about 3 times and it is fairly straight forward once you get the cushions and bedding moved aside. Make sure to turn your battery power to the off position when disconnecting/connecting the power cables. There may be a shear pin attached to the thruster cowling but if not you should have one on hand before you start the project.

One more item to check…..assuming it is a shear pin and you replace it make sure the thruster housing/propeller are clear of debris so it does not instantly repeat the breakage. Someone will need to go for a swim!!

Update. Haven't had a chance to deal with my
malfunctioning rear thruster. There is power to the motor but no function. Just discovered there is a good piece of rope hanging out from the Thruster Inlet. Is there a simple way to remove the rope and regain function while the boat is still in the water?

Most likely the rope caused the shear pin to break as they are designed to do. The rope is probably wrapped around the thruster prop so someone needs to get wet and get it out of there. Once you are assured there is no obstruction of the prop you will need to change the shear pin as stated in previous posts. The rear one is the worst, depending on your mechanical ability and how agile you are you can do it. The shear pin can be replaced with the boat in the water. There are quite a few posts on here relating on how to change the rear shear pin.

As stated by Brian B, most likely the shear pin is broken and someone must go for a swim to remove the rope around the prop. After the the rope is removed, turn the prop by hand to see if it moves freely without resistance. That will tell you if the shear pin is broken. If there is resistance, the shear pin still might be broken but there is still some binding somewhere that you will need to deal with.
