There was a thread a while ago regarding the screen rusting on the port hole at the head. I had the same issue on my 5 month old R-27. The screen rusted to the point to where it was starting to seperate from the edges. I removed it from the brass ring by heating the solder around the perimeter and then smoothed out the edges around the ring. I then purchased plastic screening and cut a square larger than the brass ring. I laid this on top of a larger piece of plastic wrap. I placed a very small bead of silicone caulk on the solder side of the ring and then pressed it firmly on top of the plastic screening. After letting it dry overnight I peeled the plastic wrap away from the assembly and then trimed the outside edges around the ring to cut away the excess screening. Below is a picture of the finished product. Hopefully this will hold up longer than the original. below is a picture of the finished product.

Nice work! 😀

Nice solution.... (note to myself... check head's port hole screen for any rust...) 😉

Hmm....wonder why I didn't get a port hole screen with my boat?

I do not have one either. This does solve any rust problem!

I got screens on all my port holes and they all rusted. I was wondering how I was going to replace them. Stainless steel screen is very expensive. This looks like a better deal.

Very nice work on the screen Mike, you are an over achiever. My 27 also came (late June 2011) with no screen but there are two nifty spring retaining rings that could probably hold in a nylon screen with some careful trimming.

John

Check with your dealer, he may have your screen. The screen is mounted on a brass ring that is about an 1/8 inch thick and 3/8 inch wide and has little knob so that when you remove the head side spring ring you can pull it out.
