Since the factory-installed transducer is in-hull, has anyone added a water temperature sensor or a through-hull transducer? If so, where did you install the sensor/transducer?

I suppose needing to know the sea water temperature is important if one likes to swim when anchored. Otherwise, I'm not sure how useful this information is to warrant installing a sea temperature sensor in the hull, etc. A simple, also cheaper, option would be to buy a waterproof thermometer attached to a string and put in it the water for a short while to gauge the water temperature that way. No maintenance required either!

its useful for fishing

Being a participant in a socially acceptable (I think it is?) obsessive behavior, I have put an extraordinary amount of time in making my R25 fishable. Installing a well researched placement for what was at the time the state of the art chirp transducer in my boat was far from trivial. Avoiding hull turbulence is the biggest obstacle for tugs with the many ridges and protuberances that could cause a bubble stream at speed. Here is where I placed mine but every boat size and configuration has its own “best” location. You will need the appropriate nav unit to power a chirp style transducer. Transducer is near center of image as described in associated info with link- yes it gives surface water temp quite accurately. If you would like more on install pm me. For reasons unknown the original format Is stretched so round unit appears as an oval but you get the idea. Swims with Tuna R25sc

I agree with swims with tuna,on the location i followed his research and put mine in the same area it took a couple months to get the courage to drill holes in the bottom of boat, but they work well at speed and make use of all the features of the 7612..good luck

Curious what you decided to install? I have until spring haul out to decide. I need a temp gauge for sure, you can't effectively ocean fish without one. Temp breaks are one of the main things we look at on SST charts. I'm not clear if I'll install a second transducer for improved sonar performance or not.
