Hey ,new to the tug thing.we just got an 08 21ec.i know there should be some drip at the shaft, but how much is proper?

1-2 drop a minute when shaft is turning is good enough, it is very easy to adjust too. Congrat on your new toy by the way 😀

Thank you,I guess an adjustment is in order, got a drip every 8 seconds.how do I tighten that up?

Loose the aft nut, tight the forward one a tiny bit (1/16 of an inch at the time with your finger) and observe to see if it slows down, you can do this while tied up alongside, put gear in forward, once the drip rate is good, tight the after nut. That's it! At faster rpm I do not see the drip, but the shaft is wet near the forward bolt.mine was at 5 second even with the boat engine off before I made the adjustment...

Pat,thanks for the tutural.will get on that.loving this slo ride !

Slow ride rocks! I love living at 5 kts 😀

I have a 2012, 21" EC, one of few in Norway. I have not found so much about the dry stuffing box for the propeller shaft.
Can anybody help me with some info about this system. What is the gland packing stuff in the stuffing box, teflone rings or fiber. What is the correct size of the packing stuff. I have an Yanmar 30HP.
Thank you in advance.

Toggen,

According to my mechanic, the packing gland are good for many years, he said that 25 years old boat have the original packing and they do not require to be repack unless that there is a malfunction. Perharps someone else will chip in to verify that this information is valid...

Hello Toggen,

The 21EC uses 1/4" packing material; approximately 3 "wraps" around the shaft as I recall.

It is three wraps, but three separate pieces and the joints need to be cut on a bias and they need to be offset from one another. Say 11 , 2 and 6 o'clock. To get a good cut get a piece of tubular material the same size as your shaft. Wrap the material around it and on top of the starting point. Then cut through with a razor blade on an angle. It will be a perfect match at an angle end to end. Do that for all three pieces.
