I am starting to get a drip at the shaft seal when not running on my 2010 Ranger 21EC. What type of seal is that?
I assume it is a traditional stuffing box. Is that adjustable to stop the drip or is there more to do?
How do you adjust? The drip is almost constant...once every 2-3 seconds when engine is not running.

I have only owned for a year and I have to assume the stuffing box has never been serviced or repacked.
And....I also assume this must be done out of the water?

Harley, lots of good how to's on you-tube as far as seal packing. It's a piece of cake/ easy fid. Yes it can be dune in the water but if repacking with new packing it would help to be on the trailer so your not rushed and can take your time and do it right the first time. Bob

I have the boat out of the water so I will have time to do it without sinking the boat. I would like to have the packing material in hand before I start. Any idea what to use? diameter?

Harley, I would bet it's 1/4 inch, but to be sure I would measure, if not just order 1/4 and 3/8 inch packing and return the one not used. They usually comes in a roll of 5 ft for about $20. Don't for get the extraction tool cost about $15. Good luck and let us know how it goes. Bob

P.S. I like the Palmetto Synthetic W/PTFE and lube white, but every one has a different opinion.

I repacked mine last year when I had the shaft out and the packing was 1/4". The package I bought said PTFE Flax but as Bob said there are different kinds and different opinions on what's best.

One thing I found was that there was only two rings in mine while normally you would see 3 I believe. I tried 3 rings but could barely get the threads to engage so I left it at two.

I trailer my boat and only do day trips so I've never fussed about getting to a recommended drip rate, just as long as I have no overheating of the stuffing box I'm good.
