Subject: Shifting from forward into reverse on R-23 w/outboard ?

I've been reading up on the Yamaha 200HP outboard that the R-23 is equipped for. When changing the throttle lever from Forward to Reverse does one have to pause in neutral in the transition ? Is the transition done with little to no gear noises ?

Outboard motors should be shifted rapidly. Just click the lever from neutral to 'in gear', or from in gear to neutral. Do not slowly move the lever from neutral into gear. If you hear a ratcheting sound, that is the shift dog skipping on the gear dogs, which is not good. A proper shift can result in a 'clunk' sound. When shifting from forward to reverse or the opposite, it is good to pause in neutral.

I recall you asking about this with your R21. I am not aware of any boat that should be shifted from forward to reverse without a pause in neutral. If you are shifting properly, there shouldn't be any unusual noise.

If you want smooth shifting - get a Volvo! Mine is the smoothest/quietest shifting boat I have ever owned. Had lots of "clunkers" and don't get me started on the Mercruiser "momentary interrupter switch"!
