We’re new to our R31 which has an electric cooktop. Our previous boat had a propane stove so we are getting used to the new electrical system. My understanding is that when we are off shore power we should run the generator to operate the cooktop. If we are under way, can we use the inverter to power the cooktop or is the generator the only way to power it? Can the generator be run while we are motoring. Sorry for these silly questions, but we just aren’t sure.

Welcome aboard!

You can absolutely run the generator while underway. We do it whenever the want/need arises. I’ll let someone else tackle the electric stove question as we have propane.

We have a 31CB. Lots of things going on for this size boat. Keep the questions coming!

We also run the generator while underway, no problem. The inverter will let you know if it can keep up. It will depend on what else you're using. Try it, watch the levels on the inverter, if it is not keeping up, turn on the generator.

I copied a link showing the wiring schematic of the R31. If you look at the way the inverter is wired the cook stove usage is not an option. The cook stove can only be powered by the generator.

The cook stove can be powered by the inverter if there is a change in the panel wiring. I have a C26 and have wired my entire panel to be powered by the inverter. I have a 2000W inverter and can use the cook stove while the engine is running or the convection oven. Notice the word OR. Each high watt appliance should be used (ONE AT A TIME) when using the inverter. I do not attempt to use the marine air at all. The hot water heater is not needed because the engine cooling system takes care of that. I use outlets, stove top, micro/convection oven while under way. I also use them sparingly while at anchorage because we do not have a generator.
