I am considering changing the twist-type 30 amp shore power inlet to the SmartPlug inlet on my Cutwater. Does anyone have any experience with this system and is it a worthwhile investment? I was thinking of having Coastal Marine in Seattle install the inlet and I would change the connector. Does this sound reasonable? thanks for any advice - Bill

It is a worthwhile upgrade and easy to do. It was a direct replacement for the original power inlet on my R27. If you can handle replacing the cord end you can likely do the boat side as well. Smartplug has videos you can watch. A number of us have done this.

Just did it yesterday on our R25, took about ten minutes. Would have taken five but the old wire was melted into the receptacle, why every boat manufacturer does not make these standard I will never know, Ranger and Cutwater are you listening???? High quality and foolproof (I think). Wish all pedestal manufacturers would also go to the Smart Plug connection, so much easier than trying to connect upside down with the old style plug.

Yes, it absolutely is a worthwhile upgrade. We asked the factory to do it during the build of our R27. What a dramatic improvement over the more conventional system. If you do a search through Tugnuts, you will find other threads. The enthusiasm about Smartplug has been unform, I think.

But, one caution. If you look for other posts, you will also find one from Barry (Baz) sometime this spring that Smartplug will be out with some new products soon. He encouraged all who could wait to do so. You might want to consider holding off for that reason . . . for just awhile, at least.

But do make the switchover at some point. You won't regret it.
