Since I resurrected the laptop to carry pdf charts in addition to the iPad Navionics app, and as redundant backup, I installed DeLorme Topo USA.
The bundle came with a gps antenna puck that plugs in a usb port.
You also have to buy a data subscription(no free data almost anywhere these days...) and then can download NOAA charts to the Delorme program.
It does function as a moving map, with various zoom levels, and displays heading and speed, but is a little disconcerting having the streets there as well. Perhaps there is a configuration option somewhere so only nautical chart will display.
It isnt perfect, but just another electronic tool that doesnt need connectivity to function.
