I am looking at a 2012 25 and am wondering about the noise levels underway and with the generator on at anchor.

I have read numerous posts about sound levels that have been very informative but not exactly what I am looking for.

The 2012, as I understand it, has the diesel mainly under the cockpit so the noise characteristics might be quite different than the earlier models. The posts I found referred to either the earlier models or the new outboards.

I spent a long day on a pontoon boat this week and recorded the noise at 90 db. The whole time I was out there I thought how nice it would have been to be inside a quiet pilothouse like my old C Dory 22. That's what started me researching the noise on the Ranger 25 I have my eye on. If normal noise levels are in the 90 db range, it's not the boat for me.

Thanks!

I do not know the decibel rating, but have several friends with the 25SC and have not heard any complaints. I have the 27 with the same configuration and have never really had an issue with the noise, especially when the cabin door is closed.

The C28 I have is my first diesel. I was concerned about noise too. My experience with it has been positive, noise not bad at all specially with door closed. My generator, on the other hand, is a bit noisy. I have the MASE i2.7. Its a one lunger so has to run at 3600 RPM to make 60 cycles for US standard power. I also have solar so as long as the sun cooperates I only need the generator for a short time in the morning and short time at night to top off the batteries and run the cooktop. If I have to run the AirCon I do need the generator on full time, but in the stateroom the noise isn't bad at all.

Everyone has a different level of tolerance to noise, so I would suggest a sea trial to determine if the boat you are looking at is comfortable for you. I have an RT25SC and the noise at cruise with the Volvo Penta running at 2600 rpm is for us acceptable. On the other hand the Mase 2.7 generator would be unacceptable for us at anchor. Also I would not in my boat run the generator or engine at anchor without having having good ventilation in the cabin since the cabin panels that open to the engine compartment are not sealed well.

Our R27 Classic with the Volvo D3 measures about 67db with the windows and door closed at 14kts. The R25SC should essentially be the same or less (due to lower max rpm).
