Space for Boat's name on R-21EC's transom area

Subject: Space for Boat's name on R-21EC's transom area

I've looked at various photos of the current R-21EC's transom with the swim step installed. The swim step is installed quite high up and it appears to me to leave little space for placing the Boat's name and Hailing Port on the transom. I'm apt to not bother with placing my boat's name on the transom because of this, and I don't think this is a violation of Federal nor State rules.

In addition, if a cooler/igloo box were to be placed on the swim step any boat name would be obscured for sure.

It appears that the best place for the Boat's name for it to be clearly visible is for it to be placed on both sides of the forward/upper hull areas, along with the States registration number if so required.

What have others done/decided about this ?

Hello Barry,

I put my state registration numbers on the forward portion of the pilot house (below the windows) which left the bow open for the name. The previous owner of my boat place his hailing port on the transom above the swim step. I would guess 3-4" high letters will fit there. I ordered 6" lettering for the name.

Dave: Thanks... 🙂 that helps to know. Maybe just placing the Hailing Port on the transom is best and name on the bow as you've done will work for me.

I recently contemplated the same issue. I read somewhere that you can do either a Federal or State documentation but not both. I called the Coast Guard and expressed my concern that my raft would cover the boats name (Federal registration). The officer I spoke with didn't seem concerned. A fellow tugger made a good point. Federal documentation requires emergency contact information where a state registration does not. Contact the Coast Guard. They are more than helpful answering questions or concerns.

I've decided against USCG Documentation & Homeland Security for my R-21EC. I did have it for my previous R-25. So I'm left with meeting my States regulations for where to place my boat name and registration number. I like what Dave (SGIDAVE) has done. It's simple and provides good visibility and from what I understand meets my States requirements.

The USCG Documentation now imposes a $26 annual renewal fee starting this year. Knowing how Government fees can change I would expect to see this fee increase over time. :cry:
 
Good thing you decided against documentation with your soon-to-be 21: documentation requires the boat to be 5 net tons or more (this is not the weight of the boat) - the R-25 just meets that requirement, the 21 would be under that rating.

Also, you may want to check with WA regarding the placement of state registration numbers: some states require that the state registration numbers be at the bow.

I'll save you the time: a quick check shows that WA also has that requirement for placement...

Just want to save you having to move a boat name due to a nit-picky enforcement officer.

The federal requirement for state registration number placement is a little less specific, stating that the numbers must be placed on the forward half of the vessel. However, individual state requirements must be adhered to first and foremost.

I guess the lessen here is to check in with whatever entity oversees boating registration in your state before placing your numbers and registration decals on your vessel.

How helpful of you to research Georgia's boating regs...

I would guess ALL states stipulate placement of registration numbers and decals on the "bow."

Recall our 42nd president: it depends what 'bow' means...

And the rest of the story...A few years ago I built a skiff...the process in Georgia requires me to have a DNR officer "inspect" the vessel and issue a HIN so that I can proceed with registration. Whilst I had the opportunity I ask him about the "bow" placement of registration numbers. It seems so intuitive right? We all know where the bow is located, right? So I ask him "where does the bow stop?" His response was the forward 1/3 of the vessel is considered the bow.

Ok, I may have stretched the 1/3 rule slightly in the case of my 21EC, but you get the picture.

The lesson here is as one moves aft ward from the stem, WHERE DOES THE BOW END?

I placed our home port on the transom and the boat name on the bow. I placed the state registration identification over the area where the previous owner had his.

I put the boats name on both sides of the pilothouse.

 
I've decided to go with Dave's (SGIDAVE) method for boat name and Registration numbers. Boat name will be placed on port/starboard upper bow area, Registration will go on both sides of the Pilot House and the Hailing Port on the transom.

I will have Margaux place the various things on the boat at the factory before delivery. She did the same for our R-25 back in 2009 and still has the various templates for "LAXEY" from back then. 🙂 She does a very good/excellent job.
