Have been reading a lot of posts regarding the speedseal impeller system. Has anyone installed this on the Cummins engine. I emailed Speedseal and they want the water pump make and model number. Maybe the factory can help with that, but if someone has gone this route the info would help.

Thanks

I responded on my phone the first time so didn't say much. So here's some additional info.

First, it's not "an impeller system". The speed seal is simply a redesigned cover plate for the pump that eliminates the need to use a wrench for the bolts and uses an o-ring rather than the typical paper gasket as a seal. The idea is to make it quicker/easier to change the impeller. Great idea, BUT...

1) The cover plate on the Sherwood P1016 is already sealed with an o-ring.
2) The screws/bolts can be replaced with ss allen cap screws which GREATLY facilitates removal/installation of the bolts. Granted a wrench is still needed but an allen wrench can actually help keep the bolts captive during install and is much easier to tighten them than with soapy or greasy fingers(from the impeller).
3) IMO removing/installing the cover plate is not the difficult part of changing the impeller on the Cummins. The difficult part is getting the impeller aligned on the shaft and into the housing. And doing so without knocking the woodruff key out of the slot.

So, I'm not trying to put Speed Seal out of business and they may be worthwhile on different engines. But for the Cummins engine there are better places to spend one's money.

Thanks for the report!

You should be considering Speed Seal Life if it is available for your Cummins as it has a PTFE disc placed between the end of the cover recess and the rotating brass disc. This allows it to run dry for up to 10 minutes without destroying the impeller. On my previous boat (1990 Bayliner 3288 MY with Hino Diesels) I installed the Speed Seal Life after my boat was launched after some work was done and there was an air pocket in the raw water lines which destroyed both my impellers after several minutes when I left the dock.
