Well, there are benefits to sleeping in... Went to a long dinner meeting last night (after being up at 4AM) and got a lecture on a new drug for hypertension, got a meal that I could not eat as every single course of the 4 courses contained meat... After the second course of pushing my plate away and they announced the third would be seared sea bass, I got up and left... Char collected my portions and brought them home for the kids... Anyway, I digress... By sleeping in till 5:30 it was light outside at 6:30 when I walked across the lawn to the garage... A pair of Robins were hurling insults at each other from trees about ten paces apart on the edge of the woods... This is a sure sign of spring... The girl robins aren't here yet... The males show up ahead of them and start squabbling over the prime trees for building a nest... At this point it will be just insults and dirty looks, with lots of tail snaps... When the girls show up it gets down to business and they will be a rolling ball of flying feathers and kidney punches... I have had them on occasion, roll right up on the porch and against my boots while they were intent on committing mayhem on each other... Once the disputes are settled things calm down, and after the eggs hatch they will spend the early evenings about 6 to 10 feet apart on the lawn - studiously ignoring each other - pulling worms and flying back to the nests... So with the advent of the first pair of squabbling Robins SPRING IS surely here in the frozen North...
The Eastern sky was a red band as I drove through a hard rain with a coal black cloud overhead on my way to the office... Most of the snow is gone... Our South 40 field is completely bare this past week and most evenings when I come home there are 20 to 30 deer out there trying to find a nibble left from last year... My raised garden beds behind the office were chest deep in snow since December, the beds seem to trap the blowing snow, so they are not completely clear but are showing about half way exposed... It is supposed to have showers of rain all day and that will pretty much finish the snow off leaving only heaps behind the odd tree trunk here and there... Of course, this is Michigan and March came in soft and sweet as a lamb, so it should go out in a huff and puff and we will get more snow, but it won't stay long...
This spring is bringing another new beginning... I have sold my business with an agreement to stay on for a while, so this will be the first April in some 40 years that I will be working for someone else... It will be strange to come to this building that I have owned for 30 years and have to wait for someone else to unlock the doors to get in... And there is the unknown question of being someone's employee... This may be short lived as I have zero tolerance for people who cannot do what I do, telling me I did not do it 'right'... We shall see...
Levitation is getting her canvas... Supposedly it will be close to done by the end of the week... I will go take a look tomorrow after the office...
