The el cheapo starter battery that was installed on my 2018 R31-SE needs to be replaced.

I have decided to get a U.S. made AGM Battery and have settled on the NORTHSTAR NSB-AGM31M Ultra High Performance PRO.

It is (probably) overkill, but after a near disaster towing event described in another post, the Admiral insists that I buy the best damn battery or else!

Comments on above battery choice are welcome…

If I were going for the best cranking battery I could find, that would be the one.

John

I installed all NorthStar Batteries in my C26 May 2019. I'm not easy on my house bank so I thought I would have the house bank tested and compared to the engine and thruster banks. I just removed all the batteries to inspect them, clean all the cables and the compartments during my yearly inspections. I brought the batteries to the marina's shop to have their battery distributer inspect and test them. I installed them yesterday after getting a report back that they tested as good as new. The only down side I can say about the difference of the Northstar and the original install batteries was the weight. The NorthStar are heavy!!

I found out today that all the batteries installed on our R31-SE were MADE IN CHINA!

I am replacing them with NORTHSTAR Pro batteries MADE IN THE USA!

My final battery configuration is:

Starter and Thruster batteries: NorthStar NSB AGM31M Deep Cycle Dual Purpose
House batteries: Lifeline GPL-31XT Deep Cycle

I was lucky to get the 2 NorthStar batteries from Fisheries Supply in Seattle. They are not getting any more until LATE AUGUST!

Lifeline is also sold out of the GPL-13T until August, but surprisingly BatteryGuys in Arizona has the slightly more expensive XT in stock. And the additional cost is negated by no sales tax and free shipping.

So, my tug will be all ready to cruise next week!

Kaptajnen, thanks for the recommendation. I replaced my starter battery with a North Star manufacturered battery. They private label for Batteries Plus so I was able to pick one up the same day. I installed it already and repurposed my starter battery for the house bank for extra capacity. I should have another 2 yrs before i have to deal with the house bank.

I hope mixing house bank batteries doesn’t turn into a problem.
