Hi:

does anyone know what the symbols mean on the starter panel for the R25? There are 4 symbols with lights above them. It is the little panel that I put the key into.

Thanks

Those are Polynesian symbols entreating the gods of the sea for a safe voyage... If they all light up red, it is a sign that the sea is not calling you today...
As far as starting the engine, it helps if you turn your toes outward, squat partially at the knees and make a traditional warrior's face - mouth open, lips drawn back with the corners turned down - while uttering the loud chant, "ungghhh, ooghaa, huh, huh, huh"... This chant is to inform the engine it must start or else...
Translated literally the chant says, "My chicken can kick your chicken's butt."...

Norm, if you look at the three little switch diagrams in the upper right hand corner of the R-25 wiring diagrams here

download/file.php?id=15

I believe this is the starter/ignition switch you're trying to figure out. You'll see three of the switch positions. One, of course is off. The second one (probably as you go clockwise from off) is sending power to both the DC panel and the starter switch. The third turns the DC panel on and the 4th position (which is a "hold to turn on, temporary contact" type) activates the starter switch. Then the switch reverts to the third position again leaving power to the DC panel.
Bear in mind that this is a (somewhat) educated guess on my part, not having an R-25 here to look at.

Maybe Dr. Denny can amplify since he has an R-25 there to look at and such a great sense of humor!!

I think you are talking about the lighted squares -- probably 4 of them -- that come on when you turn the key.

Check this website for a manual: http://www.yanmarmarine.com/theme/yanma ... al-ENG.pdf

My R-25 has a 110 HP Yanmar and the 4 lights are for:
Coolant High Temperature
Engine Oil Low Pressure
Water in Sail Drive (that's what the manual says, I think it may be water in the fuel filter on the engine)
Battery Low.

This would certainly depend on the model of the engine you have. If you could get me that information, I would be able to explain this in detail.

I really do like Levitations explanation. Thank you for the good laugh!
