Starting issue

I've just developed issues starting the engine. Before and after my 250 hour engine warranty work just a few days ago. It used to start the first time I turned the key. Now it takes at least three times, after I move the throttle forward and reverse and return to neutral. Today, I didn't think it was going to start at all. After doing my throttle thing many times, it started. I have no idea why. We had a nice lunch at an anchorage and it started right away.After some good praying.
Any ideas what's going on?

Bring it back to where you had the work done. Once you touch it, it's your problem.

I agree with Chester wholeheartedly about taking it back to the servicing shop, however I have a question. When you had the 250 hour service were the fuel filters changed? If so the fuel lines and filter need to be primed electronically and if they are not or have not been could this be causing the problem? To prime the fuel systems one needs to turn the ignition key to the on position without starting the engine and then turn the key to the off position. Do this several times to prime the fuel lines and fill the fuel filters if they were not filled at the time of the service. Obviously I don't know if this is your problem but it could be the source of your new situation. Let us know what the outcome is so we can all learn from it.

Is the engine cranking over or are you moving the shift lever trying to align the neutral safety switch to get it to turn over.

Hello Bill,

So, this was occurring both BEFORE and AFTER the 250 hr service? That kinda rules out the actual service, unless there is a SECOND problem

Could you be more specific as to what you mean by "issues starting the engine"? You mention moving the throttle, so I'm wondering if you mean there was "nothing" when you turned the key as when the neutral lock out is working.

Or, is the starter cranking the engine but not starting?

A clear description of the circumstances would be helpful. In the end you may still end up taking it back to the service center as Chester said.

I had an issue starting periodically and it turned out to be a loose wire on the starter from the battery,tightened it up and everything was fine after! Hope your fix turns out to be simple.

Can't pinpoint your problem without a more detailed description, but if it is cranking and not starting be careful not to crank too much because this can cause water to enter the cylinders and cause what is known as hydrolock.

check the system ground wire from the engine the boat ground. If loose, it can effect the ability to start. For example, once you get it running a few wave or wake 'bumps' can shake the wire back into a disconnect position making the problem appear to be random the next time you try to start, then the next wave bump tightens it and the engine starting issue appears to be resolved. Working around the engine may have inadvertently further loosened the connection causing the issue to worsen.

Thanks to all. At this point the boatyard believes the problem to be the neutral lock out switch. They are ordering a new one. We'll see.... more to come.
