Is it harmful to the electrical system to run the engine for 10 minutes while on shore power?

I can’t imagine why this would be a problem. The engine is connected only to the 12V system. Since the battery charger and the alternator will be in parallel, they won’t combine, the effective voltage will be the higher of the two (I’m guessing the AC charger will see the voltage from the alternator and decide the batteries are fully charged). If you’ve ever had a dead battery in your car, hooked it up to a charger and then tried to start your car while the charger is still connected, it’s basically the same thing. Someone else can weigh in here but I don’t see an issue.

I agree, basically two voltage regulators, the alternator and the battery charger, are in parallel in that situation and the one set to the higher voltage wins. Personally, I shut off my battery charger before I turn the key to start because I don't think it is a good idea to make a very high current demand (starter motor) of the charger. Maybe it's ok but maybe not, so I just don't do it. To answer your question it should not be harmful to your electrical system. If the charger survived the transient starting current demand all is well.

Relieved! Thanks!!

Hey Bart,

Its ok to start the engine while connected to shore power, not sure if you are doing this while the boat is in the water or on the hard. If it is in fact in the hard you can still run the engine but we need to provide water to the engine via a garden hose into the engine strainer with the seacock closed. Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Kevin Lamont

Just for clarification Bart, your profile shows R-23 but you’re saying a 300hp Volvo??

That Volvo 300 is in Bart's new R-29 CB. Hi Bart, Merry Christmas to you folks ;-)
