Hydraulic steering is via a self-venting helm pump. It is a good practice to inspect for leaks and to do a standard steering wheel check (at the dock), which is verifying smooth operation from lock to lock from every station without the steering feeling like it is skipping around during the turn and making sure it stops firmly at port and starboard at or around 4-5 total turns.
If you can push the wheel past the “stop” the system has bubbles in it and may need a bleed (sometimes there are only a minimal number of bubbles that can be dispersed by turning the wheel through several times to where the bubbles simply dissipate into the top of the helm reservoir)
