I tried something today with the hopes that it might work. I recently replaced the Clarion CMD5 that came from the factory with a CMD6 as it has USB input and 2 additional inputs. I wanted to be able to run the TV through the stereo so it could be heard in the cockpit as you can see the TV from the cockpit where it is mounted in the berth area. When I replaced the stereo I happened to notice that the stereo has a lead for muting for a cell phone option. I called Clarion and asked how it works. They said that when the lead is grounded it shuts off the stereo volume. I thought simple enough. I then called Standard Horizon and asked if the negative lead for the external speaker was common with ground. Of course the tech I spoke with had no idea. My thinking here was perhaps a signal to the negative side of the external speaker would be sufficient to cause the stereo to mute. No such luck.

Anyone ever try anything like this on their boat?

I'd say that the negative lead to the stereo is AC and not a ground usable for muting.
