My boat is on the Great Loop right now and I’ll be returning to join it at month end. I plan to do a lot of anchoring over the winter and notes on more than a few anchorages have suggested Using a stern anchors to prevent the boat from possibly drifting into a channel or shore in tight anchorages. Most of the anchorages are in mud, gravelly mud, or sand with good holding.

I want to get the smallest, lightest stern anchor that’ll do the job so it’s easy to stow and easy to handle. Looking for recommendations. Bonus points for a complete “kit” I can buy on Amazon or West Marine and have it shipped right to the boat.

I should add here that I don’t need the BEST solution. I just need a solution that will work. This might be something I use just once or twice a month.

I suggest an aluminum Fortress Danforth style anchor. Should be affective in this conditions and has the added bonus to be light as it is aluminum and it breaks down into a smaller storage size and special storage bag. Very easy to stow in your lazarette for deployment.

This may not fit the bill as being a light anchor but it is in my opinion a good stern anchor. The Lewmar bruce that comes with the boat. The Bruce anchor that comes as standard equipment with the Rangers and Cutwaters is marginally sized for that anchor design. When we left on the Loop with our Cutwater I replaced the Bruce style anchor with a Rocna. The Rocna or Mantus anchors are drop them and let them set. Sleep comfortably at night. I could not do that with The Lewmar Bruce that came with the boat. I found the Lewmar bruce would make a good stern anchor. It is heavy enough, I added 10' of chain to it. It is small enough to fit in the storage compartments under the cockpit. I had 1/2" rode 100' with 10' chain, a plastic bin that the anchor, chain and rode fit in. I kept this when I sold the Cutwater and use that same set up on my 34 Mainship. The Bruce has the weight which is perfect for the stern anchor. On the Cutwater I had a Rocna 10. The R29 would probably need a Rocna 15. My advise if you already have not done it get a Rocna for the main! Use the Lewmar Bruce as your stern anchor.

I was actually thinking of replacing that main anchor and using it as a stern anchor. But honestly, it'll too much for me to handle and would be difficult to stow. And I'm not ready to replace the main anchor yet; I was going to wait until I returned to the PNW and NEEDED a better solution.

But thanks!

A Danforth style anchor would be your best bet. That is what I bought for our G/L trip next year. I got it at West Marine and shaved about an inch off each end of the horizontal bar so it would easily fit in the portside bow locker of our 2018 RT29S.

I think the Rocna's and Bruce's don't fit your specifications on light weight and easy deployment.

"Yes" to your question above. The Fortress is a danforth style.

Make sure you size it for boats 31' to 35' with one of the sizing guides, not 25' to 30'. Rivers have currents..

Our secondary anchor is the Fortress Model FX-16 (Weight 10 lbs). I want to be able to deploy it relatively easily in the event I am in a situation that I want to use it so I have it assembled and stowed in the Port side lazarette aft of the batteries in our R29S. I have the lazarette floor covered with dry-dek so it is safe down there. Attached to it are 10 feet of 1/4" G4 chain and 125' of 1/2" 8 plait nylon stored in a rode bag.

Thanks for all the replies, folks. I wound up with a Fortress Fx-11.

I know that some of you are going to say that the anchor is too small for my boat — but this is for a stern anchor, which will only be deployed to keep the boat’s back end from swinging too far when I’m in a tight anchorage or near the edge of a channel. It shouldn’t need to fight any considerable current. This is the same model some folks I met on the loop use for their R-31. I need something easily to handle and stow. I hope this works.

Amazon had the kit for about $360 with free shipping.

Having done significant parts of the loop on the rivers you may want to consider a stern tie to a tree on shore. Run the line to shore on your dingy. Then run the line back to the boat. When you leave you just have to untie and pull it in. I kept the line on the original spool. Also comes in handy if you need to tow a boat.

Thanks for the tip I acquired a big spool of line from a "looper" who sold their RT25 and is now "sailing on the asphalt"
