Decided to change my shear pins on the side thrusters, 2012 R29. No problem with the bow thruster. The stern thruster has turned into a big problem, inaccessible. They are now saying that the fuel tank has to be removed to get at the shear pin. Does this make any sense. What is the best path to the pin?

Many thanks,

Hello Baetz,

I've actually done this one before, you don't need to remove the fuel tank. It does however help to slide the tank to starboard to gain better access to the stern thruster. The other helpful tip it so move the raw water wash down pump out of the way so you're not laying on it when getting to the motor. Other than that it's the exact same as replacing the bow thruster pin.

Thanks,
-Kenny

I have done this many times on my 2011 R29.. Kenny is bang on. Just those two little things are a huge help.. I have also found if you can do it in the heat of the summer I slip in and out a lot easier.. 🙂
It is not a fun job but take your time. Look for any hose claps or tie wraps that make scratch you going in and out as well. A bit of tape on them can save some blood.

out of curiosity, why change them if they are working?

Got the idea to replace the brass shear pins with stainless steel pins from Ranger owners who had the brass pins fail. The pins just wore out and broke. When we removed the front brass pin it was almost worn through. Soft brass I guess. So it seemed better to replace the pins before they fail.

Would be worth checking after a season to make sure it is not wearing away the shaft. Something will need to give.. If it was wearing a way the pin it will now wear away one or the other.
