I have tried various homemade stern tie reel rigs with dismal success. About to bite the bullet and get one from Fisheries. I have a Classic R29 and am wondering what others would recommend.

I use a $4.00 laundry basket and dump the rope in haphazardly. The rope never tangles.

We also use a laundry basket. We store it in the lazzarete and can put it in the dinghy to take the line ashore after securing one end to a stern cleat if solo, or leave the basket in the cockpit and take one end ashore while a crewmember pays it out.

I use a 600 ft spool of Samson MFP Floatline 3/8". The spool from the manufacturer is durable plastic. I made a reel out of schedule 80 PVC pipe that fits over a 1" diameter piece of aluminum pipe that fits into the factory installed pole holder on either side. The bottom of the aluminum pipe is notched to fit over the pin at the bottom of the pole holder and keeps the reel/spool properly oriented. The line spools on/off easily. There are a few "D" pins that allow the reel and handle to be broken down for storage. When not being used, the whole thing is stored in a plastic tub just forward of the rudder.

I fabricated a demountable hanging stern line reel from 1" polished 316 rail material, two substantial plastic spools left over from leaded line purchase, and tee fasteners from local chandlery, together with a crank arm. I bought 500' of 3/8" braided polypro rope (it floats). I'm really pleased with how it works!

You can see a picture of it thru AIS, either VesselFinder or Marine Traffic, using my boat name or MMSI.
