had guests over weekend head terrible do i take out head to install fresh water line and how hope a tug nut has a idea

The charcoal filter on the vent really stopped the smell coming from the waste tank. If the smell is in the head itself it could be coming from the shower sump pump. It was a chore but we removed the sump and cleaned over two years worth of hair, soap scum, and unknown yuck. It's much better now.

After reading the thread on homemade holding tank filters, I fabricated one last year with parts from Lowe's (PVC connections) and Walmart (filter material and charcoal). Cost less than $11.00 and it works great. Splices right into the vent line and by taking the homemade route I was able to make the unit to a length which did not require a lot of vent line bending.

If the sewage odor is in the head compartment, use the shower head to put an inch or two of water in the bowl after you flush (sufficient to cover up the bowl's horizontal outlet pipe). This will seal off the bowl from the holding tank and prevent sewage gases from coming back up the soil pipe into the head compartment.

We noticed this problem, really BAD, on our last outing. The odor for us was permeating the cabin and v-berth everytime we flushed. We kept the holding tank clean(as much as possible, used lots of chemical to treat, no luck).

Very happy to see some great solutions to try!!!

Thanks for the ideas!

In addition to the inline filter and your favorite holding tank chemical you could also have a rubber choker valve that has lost its rigidity. When this happens the rubber valve does not close all the way after a flush thereby letting holding tank odors permeate back up and into the head and cabin. One way to check is to partially fill your toilet bowl and let the water stand overnight. In the morning or many hours later if the water level has visibly gone down you may need to replace the choker valve. Google the owners manual for your toilet or check your onboard manual to see where the valve is located, part number, etc. Let us know your results.
